Grimlock was the leader of a small Autobot strike team on Cybertron along with his future Dinobot teamates. During the final days before the launch of the Ark, Grimlock's team were among those assigned to escort a large energon shipment. However, the transport came under attack by Bruticus. The transport managed to escape, but majority of its escorts were slaughtered, and Grimlock and his team were taken to be interrogated and eventually experimented upon extensively by Shockwave, resulting in him gaining his Dino form.
